So I've always been an on the fence kind of girl. I can be swayed by the wind from someone's breath. Really, it doesn't take but a half of a conversation with someone who's passionate to change my mind. I don't know why really. I feel passionately about things, but if someone has a good agrument against, I quickly sway. I want to think that I always have an open mind to everything. But sometimes I think its because I don't want to be judged by my choices, especially in politics. My brother is extremely involved in politics. He keeps up with who's who and what they believe in, liberal or conservative, states and so on. Like he was bothered I think by the NY governor who was taken down a week or so again. And I hadn't ever heard of the man...god bless him. But I felt bad because Bryan did. I wasn't surprised that the man did it but I hated that it happened to him.
Moving on to my point. So I have been watching the front runners of the parties. And I'll start with McCain. I'm glad he's the one that has the lead & no real competition. He has alot of experience. He's a vet. And he knows the ins and outs of Washington. He's likeable too. He seems real. But unfortunately, he knows the ins and outs of Washington.
And Hillary has alot of experience in Washington too. She has Bill behind her, which I thought would be enough for me to vote for her, period. I truly believe that he was the best president in my lifetime. He was just like my family history. Dirt poor. Only a mother. A wild brother. From Arkansas. Country. Musician. Also he was very likeable. Smiling and joking, dancing. Personable. But they too have the ins and outs memorized in Washington. AND they may have unfinished business there like our current president did for his father.
Then there's Obama. I didn't know anything about him other than he's from Illinois. But I had to look that up. He's always poised. Thinking before he speaks. I never felt he was thinking "What would it sound like if I said it like this." Just thinking before just popping off his first thought. He didn't seem like an entertainer. which put me off alittle. Because haven't some of us become accustomed to the Hollywood politician. Heck even entertainers are one policitians....fred thompson, jessie vantura, etc.
But what sealed it for me was yesterday. His speech on race. His explaination for why he wouldn't turn his back on his pastor. ---sidebar--- Does everyone, I mean everyone, agree with what everyone in your life says? Heck no. ---end sidebar--- His eliquence and even tempered approach to this event said alot to me. He could have jumped up and denounced this man that he had admired. This man that had introduced him to chrisitanity. This man that married him and his wife. Disowned him and turned his back on him. But he didn't. He explained it to the world why this man said those words of hate and diversity. Like anyone in the South would have to have that explained to them. Gave examples of why he had to disagree with the words the man said, but couldn't turn his back to him.
Then what sealed the deal for me was his words about his grandmother, who he grew up around and who is white. It took strength to stand up there and say those words. And even more strength to not turn his back on that man.
I could so identify with what he was saying. I don't agree when people I love or care about say those hate filled words, but I wouldn't disown them for it. I've had long conversations with a close family member who once would utter the N word without even thinking about it. Grouped people together by color. He was influence by things from the past. His own father used that word. But this person has since realized that everyone isn't the same, don't think the same and aren't all bad because of their skin color.
I will be voting for Barack Obama. Supporting this man of hope.
